Gourmet Pie Worth Its Weight In Gold

A Sydney pub has taken the humble Aussie icon to the next level.

The Lord Dudley Hotel in Woollahra has introduced a pie with a $12,000 price tag to celebrate coupon business Groupon’s two millionth customer.

No expense has been spared in what could be the world’s most expensive pie, with ingredients including two cuts of premium wagyu beef – eye fillet and brisket – and two whole Western Australian rock lobsters. Organic heirloom vegetables cooked down with butter and complemented with Italian porcini mushrooms and black truffle are said to give the pie a unique flavour profile, as reported by Nine News.

And, if you’re wondering what really sets the pie apart from other gourmet varieties, Penfold’s Grange is added to the filling for richness, with real gold leaf is sprinkled over the finished product.

Chef Nathan Flint made two versions of the pie for the Today Show and said around three weeks of trial and error was needed to get the balance right.

No customer had ordered the pie yet, although a competition is being run to award lucky diners at The Lord Dudley Hotel a serving.

Despite the gourmet ingredients, Nathan said a dollop of old-fashioned tomato sauce would go well on the side.
