Tony’s Chocolonely lands in Aussie supermarkets

A pile of Tony's Chocolonely bars

Although Tony’s Chocolonely has long been touted as ‘the best chocolate in the world’, it has been slow in making its way to Australia. Previously only sold in boutique stores, Woolworths and Coles have recently announced the addition of the brand to their shelves.

“Coles is excited to launch the Tony’s Chocolonely brand into 200 Coles stores across the country,” a Coles spokesperson told news.com.au.

“Our aim is to provide our customers with more choices when shopping the confectionery aisle and offer products that excite and delight along the way.”

The news has been wildly popular among Australians, who haven’t balked at the chocolate’s high price tag: $8 per bar.

“This top-quality Dutch chocolate has a cult following, and we’re excited to offer our customers seven flavours to add to their basket during their regular grocery shop,” a Woolworths spokesperson told news.com.au.

Since 2005, the brand has gone from strength to strength, and now, with the advent of TikTok, is has taken over social media in a big way.

Started in the Netherlands, Tony’s Chocolonely is the brainchild of Teun van de Keuken, who began producing chocolate after learning about the cocoa industry’s connections to slave labour.

After a few years learning the ropes and finding the best way to produce chocolate ethically, Tony’s Chocolonely is now working to make ‘100% slave free’ chocolate on the market the norm by raising awareness. Its slavery-free production is what Tony’s Chocolonely attributes its high price tag to.
