Registrations are open for The Great Australian Vanilla Slice Triumph Merbein

Australia’s definitive vanilla slice competition, The Great Australian Vanilla Slice Triumph Merbein, is slated to take place in Merbein once again this year on August 19. Registrations for the iconic event are now open, with entries being accepted in two different categories—amateur and professional.

The competition will be slightly different this year, with the addition of a dried fruit section. Fruit cake and plum pudding entries will be accepted in both the professional and amateur categories.

The day of The Great Australian Vanilla Slice Triumph Merbein is set to be jam-packed with fun family activities—live entertainment, children’s entertainment and activities, wine tastings, vanilla slices for purchase and tasting, and market stalls.

Last year’s event, which also took place in Merbein, saw around 5,500 attendees, with roughly 20,000 vanilla slices sold over the course of the day. Sharp’s Bakery in Birchip, Victoria, took out the ultimate title.

Although this year will see the inclusion of new categories, the focus of the day remains on the vanilla slice. The judges this year will be looking for ‘a custard with a creamy smooth texture and a balance of vanilla taste with a crisp crunchy pastry topped with a smooth and shiny glaze fondant’.
