Fire engulfs Far North Queensland bakery

Staff and locals in Cooktown are devastated today after fire engulfed the Far North Queensland town’s only bakery this morning.

Fire investigators are looking into the cause of the fire which took hold of Cooktown Bakery at around 10.20am, with two Queensland Fire and Emergency Service crews called to the scene.

The blaze was extinguished shortly before 12pm, however the roof of the building has completely collapsed.

“Crews are still at the scene mopping up little pockets of fire,” a QFES media spokeswoman said.

“We have a fire investigator there now and they are trying to work out exactly what caused it.”

Beaudeane Bird, the granddaughter of business owner Jana Whittaker, said her “heart breaks for my Nan today.”

“She has put her heart and soul into this business and to see it burn to the ground today would have been the most heartbreaking thing,” she said in a Facebook post.

“I’m so glad everyone is okay.”

The Cook Shire Council put out a public notice that the area is a total exclusion zone.
“Please be advised that in the interest of public safety, the site of the Cooktown Bakery has been declared a total exclusion zone,” the statement reads.
“DO NOT attempt to enter beyond the safety barricades.
“Cooktown Auxilary Fire Brigade has also informed us that the fire is under control, but the site is likely to smoke and smolder for the next 1-2 days. Please do not be alarmed. This is normal and the fire team will continue to monitor the situation closely.”

A GoFundMe page has been set up to assist bakery owners Jana and Greg.
