Magical Gingerbread Wonderland Pops Up In Melbourne

Epicure’s executive pastry chef Deniz Karaca has led a team of 12 from his kitchen and a brigade of volunteers to bring a gingerbread village to life in time for Christmas.

Recognisable Melbourne landmarks are all part of the massive creation, including Melbourne Town Hall, Melbourne Cricket Ground, Luna Park and a zoo. New to the installation this year is also Flemington Racecourse, including its iconic grandstand.

Now in its fourth year, Epicure’s creation is on display in the Melbourne Town Hall until Christmas Eve. Those coming to have a look at the intricate and playful display are being asked for a nominal gold coin donation, with at least $30,000 hoped to be raised for Make-A-Wish Australia.

Deniz said it’s an initiative he and his team look forward to every year.

“This year we have baked more than 500kg of gingerbread, using 300kg of royal icing and 120kg of marzipan,” he said.

“Our team painstakingly makes around 800 miniature Christmas trees to creative the festive backdrop. It’s a mammoth effort, taking more than 2000 hours.”

For those who are tempted to devour the village, Epicure’s pastry chefs have created a range of gingerbread treats that can be purchased onsite, including gingerbread men, hearts and ice-cream.
