After more than 60 years in business, the Coolangatta Pie Shop, located on Queensland’s Gold Coast, has closed its doors.
The business, which first opened in 1964, cited rising costs and a lack of tourism trade as factors in the decision.
Speaking with The Gold Coast Bulletin staff member Candy Tang said the rent was too high.
“And after Covid-19 – and especially the past two years – it’s been very quiet in Coolangatta.”
Baker Darcy Hyde told 7NEWS.com.au the cost of ingredients including meat and flour had climbed steadily over the years, forcing the pie shop to increase its prices.
“We went up by about a whole dollar or so since I’ve been there,” he said.
“There was a point where there was a little bit of a shortage in the flour because of the seasons and the crops. So that increased as well.”
Darcy said since the announcement had been made staff had been met with an outpouring of stories from customers about their first visit to the pie shop.
“Some people even back in the ’70s are now saying they’ve been coming since they were a child,” he said.
“It makes me think about how much it means to all the locals.”
In its final days the pie shop thanked its community on a sandwich board placed outside the bakery.
“Thank you for being part of our story,” it read.
