From September 22 to 27, the best emerging skilled professionals from around the worlds will descend on Shanghai, China, for the 48th WorldSkills International Competition.

Included in this number are apprentice pastry chef William Nickl and baker Connor Beisler, who were named as part of Australia’s 38-member Skillaroos team.

Connor, who studied a Certificate III in Baking at TAFE NSW Hamilton, said representing Australia on the world stage is an immense honour.

“This will be my first time competing overseas, and while I’m excited, it comes with some unique challenges – like adapting to a warmer, more humid climate, and working with unfamiliar ingredients,” he said.

“In baking, factors like heat and humidity can have a huge impact on the final result, so being able to adjust quickly will be really important.

“The competition is the culmination of months of hard work and support from many people, including my TAFE NSW teachers, as well as a dedicated team who have helped me design my showpiece and prepare for the challenges ahead.

“I’m looking forward to representing Australia, learning from some of the world’s best young bakers, and making the most of an experience that will help shape my career for years to come.”

Minister for Skills, TAFE and Tertiary Education Steve Whan said representing your country at a global competition like WorldSkills International is an extraordinary achievement and a testament to Connor’s exceptional talent, skill and dedication.

“To earn a place on the Australian Skillaroos team, alongside some of the nation’s best emerging tradespeople and skilled professionals, is something they should be incredibly proud of,” Mr Whan said.

“It’s fantastic to see 10 TAFE NSW students stepping onto the world stage, showcasing the strength of our vocational education and training, and the skills that are helping build our state’s future workforce.

“I wish the Connor and the whole team the very best in Shanghai.”
