The International Cake Show (ICSA) will be celebrating its 10th anniversary in style this year when it takes over the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre later this year.
What began a decade ago as a not-for-profit industry gathering has grown into an incredibly popular event that has been described a cross between a culinary college, edible art gallery, and a Willy Wonka factory.
Australian Cake Artists & Decorators Association (ACADA) national president Joan McDermott said ten years ago they were just a small community group.
“Today, we are a global destination. To survive and thrive in this climate proves the sheer passion of the sugar craft world,” she said.
“We are turning Brisbane into the sweetest place on earth for three unforgettable days.”
The three-day event will see a number of competitions take place, including the International Cake Off Challenge, which will pit Australia’s elite cake artists against the best from India, Japan and Taiwan. Pastry chef and TV personality Adriano Zumbo will act as host and head judge.
The Battle of the Sugar Giants competition will see competitors truck in boundary-breaking exhibits to fill 3x3m footprints. Highlights will include ‘The Sweetest Smash’ – a 2.5m tall edible Hulk filled with colourful sweet treat. Then, there’s the Cake of Origin which has the best decorators from NSW, Queensland, Victoria and South Australia battle it out to see which state rules the kitchen.
In addition to the competitions ICSA will play host to masterclasses and workshops hosted by superstars in the baking world, and even an Edible Fashionista Catwalk that merges fashion with edible art.
