Popular Sydney-based gluten-free and vegan bakery Nutie Donuts has announced it will be closing its doors.

The Dulwich Hill bakery made the announcement on Instagram in early April citing rapidly rising costs as being a main driver behind the decision.

“It’s taken us a long time to find the right words for this. After 10 years… Nutie will be closing its doors. Our last day will be Sunday 12th April,”  they wrote.

“We wish we could say this is a choice — that we’re ready to close a chapter and move on. But the truth is, we’re not. This isn’t something we wanted. It’s something we have to do and with our lease coming to an end this is the right time. Nutie has been such a huge part of our lives. It started at the Bondi Markets with big dreams, long days, and a whole lot of hope. And somehow, over the years, it turned into something so much bigger than we ever imagined.

“We’ve had the most incredible opportunities, met the most amazing people, and worked alongside a team and suppliers who have given their all, every single day. We are endlessly grateful for every moment, every customer, every early morning and late night that built Nutie into what it became.

“But the reality is — running a hospitality business right now is incredibly tough. And running a gluten free bakery, using high quality ingredients like almond meal and specialised products, has always meant tighter margins. Over time, costs have continued to rise in every direction, and we’ve reached a point where, despite everything, we simply can’t make it work anymore.

“To our beautiful team — thank you for showing up with so much heart, passion, and care. You made Nutie what it was. And to every single one of you who walked through our doors, supported us at markets, shared a kind word, or made Nutie part of your life — thank you. Truly. You have no idea how much it meant to us.

“These last few days will be incredibly emotional for us. We are taking some time today to process the news with the team.

“Our hearts are also with every small business out there trying to make it work right now. It’s not easy, and we see you. Thank you for 10 unforgettable years. We will carry this chapter with us forever.”

Nutie Donuts is the brainchild of Sina Klug and Jaques Dumont, the team behind the vegan bakery Miss Sina. The Dulwich Hill store opened its doors in 2023.
