Chan Khun from Country Cob Bakery has continued his award-winning run at Australia’s Best Pie and Pastie Competition, this time winning with a Satay Seafood Pie, while Jayme Davey of Orange Spot Bakery continued his domination of the Pastie category, winning with a Three Peppered Pastie.
Australia’s Best Pie and Pastie Competition was held at the Baking Industry Trade Show on the Gold Coast in June. Judges tested and tasted over 1700 pies and pasties over the two-day event, while giving tutorials and running commentary on the judging process to visitors.
Chan Khun from Country Cob Bakery in Kyneton, Victoria won the Best Pie with his Satay Seafood Pie. He pocketed the award along with six others, which he adds to the three he won last year.
Chan says that while satay is mostly associated with chicken or beef, he wanted to experiment with seafood, and so created his pie with fish and prawns, coconut milk and crunchy peanut butter.
“We decided to take further step to combine seafood and satay and guess what, this pie is Australia’s Best Pie of 2018.”

Chan thanks his customers for their feedback in the lead up to the competition.
“Our local customers love the pies. They love to give feedback and let us know how we can improve our pies,” he says.
The Best Pastie went to Jayme Davey from Orange Spot Bakery in Glenelg, South Australia—a bakery that has won this competition nine times now!
Orange Spot Bakery won the Best Pastie with their Gourmet Pastie, a Three Pepper Pastie that has now won two years in a row. The pastie contains marinated bell peppers, green peppercorns and peppered steak, coupled with traditional pastie vegetables.
“It’s a favourite among our customers,” says Nicholas Davey. “It’s a blend of vegetables, which we cut fresh on site, mixed with our home made seasoning and wrapped in our three-quarter puff pastry.”
The team at Orange Spot Bakery pulls pasties from general production for the competition, meaning that the pasties they enter are the same quality you can expect in the bakery.
“We have one bloke who rides his motorbike 120km to our shop every Saturday for the last 15 years, grabs a pastie, eats it, then rides back,” says Nicholas, who adds, “Fair to say the locals think they’re alright.”
The winners were announced on the afternoon of the final day of the show with trophies and prizes, including a trip to Austria, awarded to the makers of gold winning pies and pasties.
