Country Cob Bakery has officially been named as home to the nation’s best pie after taking out the Australia’s Best Pie competition.
Held as part of the Baking Association of Australia’s Baking Industry Trade Show, the regional Victorian bakery took out the top spot with their Malaysian prawn pie.
It’s the fifth time Country Cob Bakery, headed up by brothers Ryan and Chan Kuhn, have taken out the national title since they first opened their doors in 2016.
When announcing the win on social media Ryan and Chan said, “Imagine this… 370 bakeries. 2000+ pies. 3 days of fierce competition. 3 rounds of judging. And standing at the very top? Our Malaysian Prawn Pie!”
“We’re still dreaming, still smiling, and probably will be for a very long time.
“We’re absolutely over the moon and unbelievably proud.”
Paradise Bakehouse took home the Best Plain Mince Pie while Gisborne Bakery & Cafe won with the Best Chunky Plain Beef Pie category. North End Bakehouse won the Best Vegetarian Pie category and their apprentice Jasper Metzke also took home the Apprentice Plain Mince Beef Pie title. The Best Gluten-Free Pie was won by Heavens Bakehouse.
The day, however, wasn’t just about pies.
Orange Spot Bakery claimed the Australia’s Best Pastie title, alongside gold with their traditional pastie, vegetarian pastie and gourmet pastie, while last year’s winner – Brisbane’s Ray’s Patisserie – took out the Cornish Pastie category. Orange Spot Bakery apprentice Natalie Falo won the Apprentice Traditional Pastie title.
