Strong Competition At William Angliss

Strong Competition At William Angliss

An action-packed bakery section provided strong competition in July as apprentice bakers and pastry cooks competed in the 2013 Victorian Excellence in Baking competition.

Jarryd Coghlan from Red House Bakery in Maryborough was the standout performer in the bread category and took out the title 2013 Victorian Apprentice Baker. Stacey Fong from Cacao was crowned 2013 Victorian Apprentice Pastry Cook.

Both winners took home a cash prize of $250 and will go into the competition for the national titles, where $1500 is up for grabs.

Baking Association of Australia (BAA) executive officer Tony Smith said the event, which was sponsored by EOI, not only showcased skill but also presented an outstanding learning opportunity for apprentices.

“Former LA Judge winner John Leontides assisted the judges to evaluate entries and also spoke with the competitors, offering advice and encouragement,” Tony said.

“There is certainly strong competition for the national title and excitement is gearing up as apprentices from only two regions are left to compete for the highest pastry cook and bakery score.”

The national titles 2013 Apprentice Bakery and 2013 Apprentice Pastry Cook will be awarded in November, after BAA-run Excellence in Baking competitions are held in the Northern Territory (September 24) and in Tasmania (October 9).
