Retail Baristas Go Head To Head

More than 200 specialist baristas from Australia’s largest multi-food franchise operator, Retail Food Group (RFG), will compete in the 2013 Espresso Perfecto Championships in September.

The competition – which is one of the largest coffee competitions in the country – will involve baristas from Retail Food Group’s top coffee brands across Australia and New Zealand, including Michel’s Patisserie, Donut King, bb’s café and Esquires Coffee.

A total of 221 baristas will each make three espressos, three cappuccinos, three lattes and three ‘creative coffees’ in less than 10 minutes.

RFG director of franchise Gary Alford said each team and individual will be judged against strict criteria.

“The baristas will be judged on their speed and accuracy, the quality of the beverages they serve and the look and appeal of each drink,” Gary said.

“Many of the entrants are competing in their first Espresso Perfecto Championships so it’s exciting to see so many talented baristas among our coffee brands.

Being named the best RFG barista in Australia and New Zealand isn’t the only prize on offer, with the winner also to receive a trip for two to Brazil or $10,000 cash.

RFG baristas roast more than 1.2 million kilograms of coffee each year through the Evolution Coffee Roasters Group, Caffe Coffee and Barista’s Choice coffee brands.
