Pies and pasties put to the test

Australia’s Best Pies and Pasties Competition was held at the inaugural Baking Industry Trade Show in Melbourne in June.

The competition attracted 388 bakeries keen to throw their hat into the ring, or rather, pie into the oven.

The judges deliberated over 1850 entries, commenting as they went on how the products stacked up against the nationally devised and accredited judging system.

BAA National President Andrew O’Hara said it was an amazing three days where the Pies and Pasties Competition saw record entries, and the baking industry was brought together on all levels.

“The baking participants and exhibitors and the general public that made time to come and watch the judging felt confidence in the system used,” he said.

In the end, 15 Gold Winning Pies and pasties went up against each other for the final round. A team of 12 judges led by Head Judge Stewart Latter decided on the winners, awarding the best pastie to Orange Spot Bakery in South Australia for their traditional pastie and the best pie to Tatura Hot Bread in Victoria for their Chicken, Brie and Cranberry Pie.

The winners received a week of promotions plus one full pallet of PILOT Margarine and one full pallet of Mauri Flour.
