Viral cookie trend based on hottest new TV series

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably heard about the new Netflix series Squid Game—either you’re watching it, or everyone else around you is. Now, a viral cookie trend based on the hottest new series has taken off—and it’s very simple!

In the Korean series, part of the storyline centres on participants making a type of wafer-thin honeycomb cookie, also known as Dalgona candy (you might remember the Korean Dalgona coffee trend from early in the pandemic) as part of a challenge.

Dalgona candy is a traditional toffee-like snack in Korea, also known as Bbopgi in some regions.

Viewers ran with the idea, sparking their own challenge to recreate the cookies from the show (with thankfully non-fatal consequences, unlike the show!).

Like most of the challenges, it started on TikTok, with user @franziee_v sharing a video revealing how she makes hers, which has over three million views and 460,000 likes.

She begins with a tablespoon of sugar, which she holds over the stove on a low heat, gently stirring before adding a pinch of baking soda and continuing to stir. She then pours the mixture onto a baking tray lined with baking paper and lets it set for 20 seconds before using a cookie cutter to press shapes into the candy.

After it hardens, the challenge is to use a needle to cut the shape out without the biscuit crumbling—which proves difficult!

Other users have been posting their own results, with varying results (it seems easier to succeed with simple shapes).
