Frank Goldstein, owner of Goldstein Bakery and often referred as the pie king of the Gold Coast, has passed away.
His family’s business has been an iconic part of the community since its founding in 1944. Under Frank’s leadership, Goldsteins became synonymous with quality and service, boasting nine stores along the coast. The bakery’s pies, twice named the best in Australia, were a testament to Frank’s commitment to excellence.
Frank’s journey in baking began at a young age. In a past interview with 9 News, he recalled, “The first lesson my father taught me was the importance of quality in baking.”
That lesson shaped Frank’s career and the success of Goldsteins, which he took over in 1962 after the passing of his father. In a defining moment for the business, Frank and his brother John rebranded Continental Cakes to Goldsteins Bakery, setting the foundation for their future success.
The opening of the second Goldsteins store in Southport in 1968 was seen by many as a risk due to the high-rent costs at the time, but Frank’s determination ensured its success. The family’s business was a staple of the Gold Coast, expanding into multiple locations and maintaining its roots as a family-operated bakery.
Despite stepping back from daily operations in recent years, Frank’s influence remained ever-present.
“Frank will be remembered by his character, he loved everybody,” said Trisha Griffiths, a longtime employee.
Frank’s impact extended beyond business; he was also a dedicated community leader, contributing to numerous local causes and serving as chairman of the Gold Coast Hebrew Congregation.
Frank’s commitment to quality, community, and family has shaped not only the bakery but the very fabric of the Gold Coast. His legacy will live on in the pies he perfected and the lives he touched.
