Showdown of Aussie pastry chefs now on the small screen

There’s a new documentary out celebrating one of Australia’s highest achievements in the pastry world. You may remember that, in 2012, Australia took out the Asian Pastry Cup, beating Malaysia and Singapore and qualifying for the prestigious World Pastry Cup 2013 in Lyon, France. There, they competed against pastry heavyweights France, Japan and Italy in a sort of Olympics for pastry chefs.

On competition day in France, the team competed against 22 teams from across the world. They had eight hours to create sugar, ice, and chocolate sculptures, along with a host of entremets and chocolate cake.

Sandra Beeston, who filmed the action on the day, said it was like being in a football stadium.

“The audience was in a total frenzy, screaming and tooting their horns to support their teams. It was insane,” she said.

Sandra and her partner Matthew Venables followed the Australian pastry team for two years prior to the competition, documenting their journey from selection, through hours of training and preparation and finally the competitions at the Asian Cup and World Pastry Cup.

She said, “Seeing them create such delicate sculptures out of sugar and chocolate with unusual tools like hairdryers, airbrushing guns and hot knives, only to see bits of it break in an instant, was quite fascinating—and stressful!”
