Doughnut ice-cream cones are the new dessert trend sending social media into a frenzy.
Legend has it the trend began Prague, where ‘chimney cakes’ are a traditional street food. The sweet pastry is made with yeast-raised dough, and is rolled on a wooden cylinder before being baked over open fire.
Flipped upside-down, they’ve become a popular cone for soft-serve, with Aussie bakeries and patisseries jumping on board. Not suprisingly, Adriano Zumbo’s Italian café Little Frankie’s has lead the charge, with toppings including gummy bears, pretzels, 100s and 1000s, and popcorn. South Yarra’s Tivoli Road Bakery also brought back its soft-serve-filled doughnuts for the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival.
South Australian bakery, Bakery on O’Connell, has gone one step further, offering its own version of the treat: the Doughnut ice-cream cone. Combing three trends in one proved to be a good decision, with the bakery getting national media attention.
