To mark its 50th anniversary in Australia, IKEA is introducing a new limited-edition food item that blends two culinary staples: Swedish meatballs and the Australian party pie.
On May 31, the furniture and homewares giant will distribute Swedish Meatball Party Pies at all 10 of its Australian stores.
The initiative is part of a broader celebration recognising five decades of IKEA’s presence in the country. Known for integrating food into the retail experience, IKEA’s in-store restaurants and grocery sections have long featured its signature Swedish meatballs.
Developed in collaboration with Loftus Pies, a family-run bakery based in Sydney’s Sutherland Shire, the party pie is a new product combining IKEA’s traditional meatball recipe with a classic Australian pastry format.
Lotus Pies chief pie officer John Tsoutsas welcomed the challenge of combining the two classics.
“The meatball pie is certainly not something we’ve done before, so we spent time with the IKEA food team perfecting the recipe for the right amount of meatball to gravy to pastry,” John said.
“Australians are very particular about their pies, but we can’t wait for people to taste them!”
The IKEA Meatball Party Pie consists of seasoned meatball filling and rich gravy encased in a flaky pastry shell, topped with a small portion of lingonberry jam. A plant-based alternative using IKEA’s plant ball recipe will also be available to cater to dietary preferences.
Country Food Manager for IKEA Australia Tim Prevade went on to share the importance of celebrating the 50 years of Australians embracing IKEA’s food and furniture.
“The Meatball Party Pie is a fun, flavour-packed way to celebrate that,” Tim said.
“We’ve taken the comfort of a classic Aussie party pie and combined it with the unmistakeable flavour of our iconic Swedish meatballs; creating something unexpected and nostalgic, with a unique twinkle-in-the-eye that can only be IKEA.”
