The Cake Picnic travels Down Under

The Sydney Cake Picnic was a viral success

Viral sensation Cake Picnic made the trip to Australia in March, when it took Melbourne and Sydney by storm in March.

The first event on the Australian tour was held at Kings Domain in Melbourne on March 21, as part of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival.

More than 1600 cakes were presented – and devoured – at the pot luck-style event, which runs on the premise “no cake, no entry”.

Cake Picnic creator Elisa Sunga created the event in 2024, with the idea stemming from her desire to eat more cake than she could be bothered to bake.

“In my earliest daydreams of this event, it was a small and intimate picnic of maybe 15 new friends forming a circle at the park,” she said.

“Once we’ve formed our circle, we would take turns introducing ourselves and what cake we brought to the picnic. I had no idea this would draw such a crowd and that everyone would share my dream so passionately.”

Elisa travelled to Melbourne for Cake Picnic and told The Guardian, “just think of how many ovens in Melbourne were being used [for this event].”

“Of how much sugar, butter, flour was being used up in all these kitchens all around the city.

“Imagine all of the love and energy that’s been poured into the cakes that we are sharing here together today.”

After the Australian events, Cake Picnic will return to the US, for cake swaps in San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York
