If AI is enhancing your productivity, how are you spending that extra time?

AI can help save business owners precious time. But how are they spending it?

We’re constantly told that AI will save us time. In many ways, it does. From automating administrative tasks to streamlining communications and workflows, it’s quickly becoming integrated into daily business life.

In a world filled with busy and burnt out business owners and leaders, AI seems to provide the solution we’ve all been seeking. But here’s the key question: what are we actually doing with that extra time?

I believe the default response is to simply fill the gap with more work…Another task…Another meeting…Experimentation with another shiny new AI tool. But I’m here to say productivity shouldn’t just be about ticking more boxes or adding even more tasks to the to-do list for you and your team.

What if we used that freed-up time with more intentional and well managed activities? What if, instead of glorifying the hustle, we redefined productivity to include space for strategy, creativity, and wellbeing?

Let’s pause for a moment. Where do you really want AI to take you?

Busy-ness creep is real

The uncomfortable truth is that most people aren’t using the time saved by AI wisely. Instead of stepping back to think strategically or prioritise rest and wellbeing, they unconsciously fill the space with more low-impact tasks. It’s a phenomenon I like to call ‘busy-ness creep’.

Busy-ness creep happens when we mistake motion for progress. Just because our calendars are full and our inboxes are empty doesn’t mean we’re moving forward in a meaningful way. (I’ve totally been there…) We’ve been conditioned to believe being busy equals being valuable. So when AI tools clear the decks, we instinctively pile more back on because “Oh, it’s fine – I can do this quickly!”

But this constant treadmill of doing is not only unsustainable – it’s unhelpful. It steals time away from deeper thinking, better decision-making, and more meaningful human connection. And ironically, it often undermines the very productivity AI is meant to enhance.

To truly benefit from AI, we need to break the cycle. That starts with getting clear on what deserves your time – and what doesn’t.

What could I do instead?

This is where it’s time to flip the script. If AI is handing you back hours each week, how could you use that time to think more creatively, connect more meaningfully, and lead more powerfully? This is where I want to introduce you to the idea of “reflect, reconnect, and lead”.

Reflect

If AI is already taking care of the repetitive or clunky tasks in your business, then it’s not just handing back hours – it’s offering time for clarity. Use that space to pause and reflect. What’s working well? What feels disjointed or unnecessary? What can be improved or delegated further?

I suggest making it a regular ritual – whether it’s a quiet moment on a Friday afternoon or part of your weekly team meeting. Take the time to ask:

  • Where did AI help me save time?
  • What did I do with that time?
  • Was it aligned with my values and business goals?

This honest reflection helps you stay purposeful – rather than letting the spare moments slip into more noise or reactivity.

Reconnect

Just because you can automate communication doesn’t mean you can automate connection. If we’re not careful, AI can increasingly create a gap between real life humans. And that’s the last thing we want! With more space in your schedule, I recommend making a conscious effort to reconnect – with your team, your clients, and yourself.

That might look like team-building activities, face-to-face coffee catchups, or simply having proper lunch breaks or going home early. These small moments can be powerful as they build trust, spark creativity, nurture loyalty, and retain a sense of self. AI can’t replace the human moments that actually grow your business.

Lead

Finally, use this reclaimed time to lead with greater intention. Step out of the weeds and into big-picture thinking.

You might choose to block time to read more, listen to an insightful podcast, attend a workshop, or finally map out that new product or service idea. Or you might decide to start mentoring a team member or take on an intern.

Protect this time like you would any critical meeting – because it is. If needed, even label it in your calendar as “AI-Created Time” to remind yourself (and your team) of its value.

What’s your intention for AI in the future?

Sure, AI is a catalyst for creating space. But what you choose to do with that space is what defines your business or leadership. The ability to have an impact or leave a legacy during this time of change is critical.

For many entrepreneurs and leaders, we are standing at a crossroads. One path leads to relentless busywork, dressed up as productivity. The other leads to intentional progress – where time is used for purpose, not just performance.

So, go ahead, let your AI tools handle the heavy lifting. But, don’t let them take over the thinking, connecting, or creating. That part belongs to you and the humans around you.

The future of work shouldn’t be about doing everything faster – it should be about doing things better and being more human. The leaders who thrive will be the ones who understand that time saved isn’t just a perk and a path to more busy-ness. It’s about responsibility to every stakeholder above, below and around you to lead in a productive and effective way.

Progress doesn’t come from doing more – it comes from doing what matters most.
