Planning for the second annual Baking for Brain Cancer fundraiser is underway, with bakeries across the country being urged to get behind the initiative.
The initiative was born in 2024 when Tonie Dalton, co-owner of Phil’s Pies and Patries in Berwick, Victoria, was diagnosed with glioblastoma (GBM) — one of the most aggressive and deadly forms of brain cancer.
Despite having an excellent outcome after her first surgery, Tonie’s cancer came back just over a year later. She was able to have a second operation, but sadly this left her with long-term deficits.
Tonie and Phil, along with their children Nathan and Lauren decided to make something positive out of the situation while also helping others facing the same challenge. Over a family dinner one night it was decided – they would hold a fundraiser at Phil’s Pies and Pastries with all money being donated to Carrie’s Beanies 4 Brain Cancer.
Word quickly spread, and the inaugural Baking for Brain Cancer – held on May 31, 2025 – saw more than 75 bakeries from around Australia raise more than $120,000.
Phil said it was so rewarding.
“The bakeries involved were from Darwin to Northern Queensland to Perth, South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales. There were so many bakeries and it was incredible,” he said, adding Phil’s Pies and Pastries alone raised almost $35,000.
“It was extremely rewarding to see the community come out, not only in Berwick, to support us and by association support the cause, but so many members from tother areas too, and to see the baking industry come together in such a way was rewarding – and that’s a massive understatement.”
In 2026, Baking for Brain Cancer will be held on May 30, however, the students at Holmeslgen Institute Waverley the fundraising will be kicking off a little early with their annual hot cross bun drive.
Through this the students and teachers will be making hot cross buns from donated stock. One hundred per cent of the takings will then be donated – with the aim of surpassing the $1500 raised last year.
Bakeries wanting to take part in Baking for Brain Cancer will be able to nominate an item – or items – they’ll use to fundraise on May 30, whether that be pies, pastries, cupcakes, or signature creations. All the proceeds raised on the day will then be donated.
“If we can help one person, one family then it’s worth it,” Phil said.
“That’s why we’re asking the baking industry, because it is such a wonderful community of people.”
