Cut the office cake

The UK Civil Service has broken the hearts of office workers everywhere, warning that bringing Cut the office cake to work for celebrations could be a “public health hazard”, according to Bakeryinfo.co.uk.

The UK Civil Service sent out a tweet that said, “Are you guilty of snacking at work? Could your office cake culture be a public health hazard?”, linking to a story about how office workers need to be more mindful of what was offered and the impact it could have on those who had problems saying no to sweet treats.

The UK Civil Service is not the first to criticise office ‘cake culture’, with the British Faculty of Dental Surgery (FDS) saying that celebrating success with colleagues is a fundamental part of modern office culture (and basically what we live for here at Baking Business) and treating ourselves once in a while to mark something significant can play an important part in this.

“However, the rise of cut the office cake culture the workplace is becoming one of the main places we consume sugar, so we must find the right balance and think carefully about the impact of what we eat at work on our wider health,” the FDS said.

The FDS also urged employers to signpost to staff government advice about maintaining a healthy lifestyle and good oral health, and promote health messages such as the importance of exercising regularly, according to Bakeryinfo.co.uk.

“The government should work with supermarkets and other food retailers to restrict price promotions on sugary products and replace high-sugar foods at the point of sale with healthier alternatives,” the FDS said.

“If necessary, legislation should be introduced in the future in the future to address this.”
