Chocolate brand Cadbury has been removed from the King’s royal warrant list.

The brand, which was among 100 other brands to be taken off the list, was first named on the list in 1854 after it was awarded the accolade by Queen Victoria. Queen Elizabeth granted the company the status for the second time in 1955, where it remained until her death in 2022.

The warrant signifies usage by the royal household and is seen as a valuable seal of approval that appears on packaging.

According to news.com.au the companies who were denied the royal warrant were notified via letter before Christmas, and were not given a reason for their removal from the list, as per protocol. However, there has been speculation that King Charles may not be as big a fan of the chocolate brand as his mother was, who famously loved the Bournville dark chocolate bars.

King Charles reportedly kept 386 warrants that had been granted by his mother, including Kellogg’s cereal and Moet champagne, alongside Nestle, luxury Bittermint creator Bendricks and London-based fine chocolate shop Prestat.

It’s important to note the decision to let a supplier use the Royal Arms reflects the consumption of the entire household, not just the king, and also takes in factors such as sustainability.

A Mondelez spokesperson told The Sun, “Cadbury is a much-loved brand that has been part of British life for generations, and remains the nation’s [UK] favourite chocolate”.

“While we are disappointed to be one of hundreds of other businesses and brands in the UK to not have a new warrant awarded, we are proud to have previously held one, and we fully respect the decision.”

The move also means the brand has to undergo a significant change to its packaging and remove the Royal Arms.
