Back Alley Bakes, which began as a micro-bakery has stepped out of the shadows this week. The bakery recently opened its first shop front in Melbourne’s Coburg North. The shop is open for takeaway only and stocks all of the delicious favourites that the micro-bakery stocked, including sourdough breads, English muffins, baguettes, and many others.
This year, after having been dedicated to doing deliveries and only being stocked in other establishments since opening, they felt it was time to expand into a bricks-and-mortar store.
Gabriel (Gabs) and Alana, the husband-and-wife team behind Back Alley Bakes, launched the business back in November 2020. During the numerous lockdowns that Melbourne suffered through during the height of COVID, the couple was able to make Back Alley Bakes work, contactless-ly delivering bread to the doors of Melbourne’s carb-craving populace.
Gabs is the baking talent behind the outfit, while Alana handles the marketing, logistics, and service. The whole family is involved in the business and regularly features on the bakery’s Instagram page.
The bakery is dedicated to making fresh, ethically sourced, and sustainably produced products. The place a heavy emphasis on their wheat, which is stone-milled and bio-dynamically grown by a local business, in their breads and other baked treats.
The news of the new shop front was very well received by the public. A team of Back Alley Bakes volunteers jumped in to help the couple renovate their new space in the lead up to their opening on 9 November 2022.
Although the bakery will no longer be running bread deliveries to customers in Melbourne, due to their new opening, they will continue to be stocked across a wide range of Melbourne-based cafes and bakeries.
