Angelwood Pies opens its doors in Perth

Angelwood Pies has finally opened its doors

After months of anticipation, the new Angelwood Pie Shop in Leederville, Perth, has opened its doors.

The bakery, founded by chef Richard Overbye and former Modus Coffee operations manager Pat Wallis, has promised to bring a fresh twist to the beloved Australian pie.

The duo, who first connected through a pop-up collaboration between Modus Coffee and Commune Wine Store, are aiming to elevate the humble pie with bold, creative flavours.

Richard, whose culinary experience spans top Perth restaurants and international kitchens, is bringing a fine-tuned process to the bakery, while Pat brings a different perspective.

The idea for Angelwood Pie Shop grew from Richard’s frustration with a disappointing post-hike pie.

“I could do better,” he said, leading to the concept of crafting pies that would not only stand out in taste but also offer a practical, enjoyable experience.

“The original concept was all Richard,” Pat said.

“But the more I thought about it, and the more I started thinking about pies, the more I was like, ‘They’re delicious. You can put anything in them. They’re very scalable, and there’s a market there’.”

The menu will feature around a dozen different pies daily, with a mix of seasonal flavours and a core range that includes classics like steak and pepper or beef and stout. There will also be a focus on convenience, ensuring the pies are easy to eat without falling apart or becoming greasy. Additionally, expect a few vegetarian options and a limited selection of sausage rolls.
