Industrial facility fire linked to WA bread shortage

A recent fire has resulted in a bread shortage across WA

A recent fire at an industrial bread facility south of Perth has resulted in a statewide shortage of sliced bread in supermarkets across Western Australia.

The fire took place at Tip Top Bakeries‘ Canning Vale site in mid October, which has since been operating at a reduced capacity.

A Tip Top spokesperson told abc.net.au that parts of the industrial bread facility continued to operate, and bread was being transported into WA daily from South Australia.

“While we anticipate some short-term impact to bread availability in WA over the next few days, our team is working swiftly to restore full operations,” the spokesperson said.

Perth-based bakery Mias Bakery said they had been working around the clock to help support both Tip Top and its customers.

“We are trying to support our competitor in baking some of their product for them,” bakery director Steven Dunkley told ABC Radio Perth.

“We are trying to do our best to evenly spread supply across all retailers. I do feel there will be some supply issues for some time for some brands.”

A Coles spokesperson told abc.net.au that some sandwich bread products had been affected.

“We thank our customers for their patience and remain committed to restocking shelves as quickly as possible,” the spokesperson said.

Mr Dunkley also urged affected consumers to use this as an opportunity to support their local bakeries.

“There’s some great bakers out there that make some great products. It’s a good chance to try something a little different,” he said.

“Our guys are working around the clock, but I imagine the other bakers will jump into action as demand increases.”

It’s unknown how the fire first started.

We are currently staying on the Ningaloo, and thisbhas meant the IGA has bought in great fresh bread from the Ningaloo Bakery. So its actually so beautiful to see the local bread everywhere and support local, and not see the mainstream here for the short term.
