A woman was recently apprehended at a German airport with 90kg of the viral Dubai chocolate.

The chocolate, which equates to 460 bars, been distributed among three suitcases and was seized as they hadn’t been declared at customs.

A spokesperson for German customs told Reuters the 33-year-old woman had paid 4.60 euros for each of the bars, which sell in Germany for approximately 25 euros each.

The chocolate bars were confiscated and would now either be re-exported or destroyed.

Officials told Reuters that based on the quantity imported – which equated to around 2100 euros – they believed the chocolate bars were meant for commercial sale.

“In addition to the potential tax evasion for the evaded import duties of over 330 euros, customs in this case is primarily concerned with protecting the health of citizens in Germany,” the spokesperson said.

According to Stuff.co.nz officials were unable to find allergen or ingredient information on the packaging, increasing the concern customers could potentially face health risks if they consumed the chocolate.

The woman wasn’t arrested but will be investigated for possible tax evasion.

Dubai chocolate bars became a viral sensation after hitting social media platform TikTok. The chocolate bars are painted filled with a bright green filling made from pistachios and shredded filo pastry.

The chocolate is the brainchild of Dubai local Sarah Hamouda, who initially set up her business, Fix Dessert Chocolatier, in 2021 as a side hustle while on maternity leave.

“I was a working mum of two, juggling a lot with limited resources to invest in Fix. So it started with support from friends and family, attending small events, and building awareness for the brand step-by-step,” Sarah said to news.com.au.

“We didn’t have a big marketing budget, so we concentrated on connecting with people at local events and growing organically.

After one year of hard work, working with a number of chefs to bring her vision to life, Sarah officially launched the product in 2022.

Currently only available in Dubai, Sarah said she did have plans to expand her business internationally – including to Australia.

“We’ve got big dreams,” she said.

“We just launched in Abu Dhabi and from there we’re looking at expanding regionally and internationally. Australia is definitely on the radar and we’re excited to take Fix beyond the UAE.
