After much success with their Maker Coffee brand, John and Stephanie Vroom have decided to venture into new territory with opening of their own bakery. Baker of Things will be in Richmond, Melbourne, with plans to open in February.
Initially conceived as a wholesale business to supply baked goods to Maker’s five cafes, the plan shifted when John and Stephanie Vroom found the perfect location for a retail bakery.
The space caught their attention with its stunning glassed-in kitchen and inviting atmosphere.
“It’s casual, but it’s beautiful. It just felt so right and pushed us to want to do more,” Stephanie said.
The intentions to remain as a supplier were overwhelmed by the opportunity to open a bakery that invites customers into the baking experience. This dream became a reality, with the support of former Beatrix production baking manager, Zoe Pearce who will serve as head baker. Her extensive career in the industry also includes work at Hardware Societe and Ora in Kew. Zoe will oversee the production of both savoury and sweet items with the bakery offering a range of fresh, seasonal baked goods.
While Baker of Things has already been supplying Maker stores with items like toasties, cookies, and giant rainbow yo-yos, the retail location will offer an entirely new range of products.
Expect sourdough made with a starter Stephanie developed during lockdown, focaccia slabs, and fresh baguette sandwiches. Sweet offerings will include changing layer cakes, and scones that Stephanie says will be revived in new innovative ways.
