WA wheat silos transformed into works of art

Wheat silos are getting a facelift across Western Australia’s Wheatbelt region. Local and international artists have painted murals on silos in Avon, Ravensthorpe and Northam, and are resuming work in August, starting on a new silo in Merredin.

Lynda Dorrington, executive director of FORM—the organisation behind the murals—says the year-long project will connect a network of regional towns by a common thread of art on an epic scale.

“We want to cast light on these beautiful, distinctive regions, reveal what they have to offer to the rest of the state and help us connect with what makes us Western Australians,” she says.

The new mural in Merredin will take approximately four weeks to complete. FORM has commissioned Kyle Hughes-Odgers to paint across the four 35m-high grain storage wheat silos.

Kyle said, “I have painted all over the world but having grown up in Western Australia. I feel honoured to work on a project of this scale in the Wheatbelt.”
