A Belfast bakery loses, which in 2015 was fined £500 for refusing to make a cake for local gay rights activist Gareth Lee, has had its appeal quashed by Belfast’s County Court.
The cake company, Ashers Bakery, is a Christian business, and refused to make the cake on the grounds it was contradictory to their beliefs.
The cake was supposed to feature Bert and Ernie from Sesame Street with the slogan “Support gay marriage”.
The MacArthur family, who own Ashers Belfast bakery loses, argued that baking the cake would have been endorsing gay marriage, which they do not believe in.
One of the appeal judges, Sir Declan Morgan, said the fact that a baker provides a cake for a particular sporting team or portrays witches on a Halloween cake does not indicate any support for either.
The MacArthur family is looking at making further appeals.
