Although we’re ahead here in Australia, we’re seeing bakers in the US getting creative to celebrate their favourite campfire treat on National S’mores Day, which is Monday, August 10.
Fore the uninitiated, a s’more is made by placing a square of chocolate (preferably milk chocolate for optimal melting once the warm marshmallow is placed on top!) on a Graham cracker (the Australian equivalent may be an Arnott’s Granita or a plain digestive), with a toasted marshmallow on top, and then another cracker to create a sandwich.
The name “s’more” is actually a contraction of the phrase “some more” – a testament to how tasty they are. The first S’more recipe was published in a book of recipes by the Campfire Marshmallows company in the early 1920s and gained popularity amongst girl guides and boy scouts, and eventually became a pop-culture icon of American food.
National S’mores Day was created several years ago to celebrate this unique treat, and is sponsored by the National Confectioners Association.
