Porter Avenue Pies and Cakes, a family-owned bakery in Highton, Victoria, is set to open the doors of its new retail space on April 12, 2025, at 22 Porter Avenue.
The opening marks a significant milestone in the growth of the bakery, which has become a staple in Greater Geelong for its award-winning pies and cakes.
The Howard family’s journey into the bakery business is deeply rooted in passion and tradition. Corey Howard, the co-owner, began his apprenticeship as a pastry cook at 16, inspired by his hometown role model, Charlie Searle. His daughter, Maylee, followed in his footsteps, excelling in national baking competitions and winning the 2024 Baking Scholarship Award.
“It is a credit to Brendan Carter at Federation Tafe who is now teacher of two generations of Howards!” says Corey.
Maylee’s skills in pastry and chocolate have been honed through mentorships, including opportunities abroad, with a trip to the San Francisco Institute set for November.
The bakery’s expansion also reflects the Howard family’s commitment to career pathways. They are strong advocates for apprenticeships, offering mentorship to younger generations, including their son, Nate.
The grand opening promises a festive atmosphere with a ribbon cutting at 9:25 AM, followed by a live performance from The Mik Maks and a chance to meet the bakery’s mascot, Petey Pie.
“The new retail space promises an expanded product range, featuring the award-winning pies and cakes that have made Porter Avenue Pies and Cakes a beloved fixture,” Corey said.
