Move over Big Mac: Meat pies are our fast food favourite

Australians have worshipped meat pies for more than a century, with more than 270 million expeted to be devoured in bakeries, footy fields and pubs this year alone.

And in September, the cultural icon was elevated to even loftier heights thanks to Leichhardt Library, New South Wales, as part of statewide celebrations for History Week.

The exhibition, “The meat pie: Australia’s own fast food” was dedicated to the grand history of what is widely considered a national dish, tracing its origins in the ancient world through to its mass produced place in supermarkets and servos.

The celebration even featured a song honouring the owner of family company Simple Simon pie making machines, Tom Lindsay.
