As far as sweets go, Christopher Thé’s Strawberry Watermelon Cake is pretty famous as one of Australia’s most Instagrammed desserts.
The colourful confection served up at Newtown’s Black Star Pastry has achieved notoriety – including a write up in The New York Times – for its visual appeal which makes it perfect for the ‘gram.
And now Black Star is sharing the love with its fans further south, with a new Melbourne pop-up patisserie opening in St Kilda under Jackalope Pavilion.
In the Acland Street location, Black Star will find itself at home amongst popular Melbourne bakeries and patisseries.
The Strawberry Watermelon Cake consists of a slice of ripe, juicy watermelon between layers of soft almond dacquoise (meringue cake) and rosewater whipped cream, with a top decorated with strawberries, pistachios and dried rose petals, giving it its beautiful, bright appearance.
Other favourites customers can expect to see on the shelves include other summery tastes like the refreshing Raspberry Lychee Cake, the Pistachio Lemon Zen cake with white chocolate mousse, as well as a number of savoury menu items.
The pop-up opens Monday, November 25 at 7am, and will be around until at least Easter 2020, so you have plenty of time to pick up a photogenic summer dessert and a strong coffee using beans from St Ali.
While Black Star hopes to eventually make a permanent home in Melbourne, the St Kilda pop-up at 2C Acland Street will be open Monday to Friday 7am to 4pm, and weekends 8am to 5pm.
