With just a few weeks to go until the LA Judge Award for Baking Apprentice of the Year competition takes place, the judges for the event have begun to be announced.

Included among the ranks are:

  • Nathan Roberts (Bakels). With more than 21 years in the industry under his belt, Nathan’s career has taken him from management to process improvement, product development and technical baking. He’s also the holder of three national baking titles.
  • John Kruik (Mauri). A former LA Judge winner himself, John began his baking career in a hot bread shop in Sydney. After taking home the LA Judge trophy in 1986, John went on to hone his skills at the Bread Research Institute before moving on to roles in a number of bread, roll and pastry companies. He is now the Technical Applications Manager at Mauri.
  • Neil Beattie. After a career spanning nearly half a century in the baking industry, Neil retired six years ago. He began his baking journey as an apprentice at the Store Co-op in Newcastle, before venturing overseas to expand his baking skills. He went on to own a hot bread shop in North Sydney, followed by time at the Bread Research Institute, where he gained experience in ingredients and formulations, techniques and bread show judging. He spent 26 years with Fermex/Lesaffre Australia Pacific, serving as the National Technical Manager

The LA Judge Award for Baking Apprentice of the Year competition is set to take place on May 7-9 at AEGIC Sydney. Further details about the competition, as well as tickets for the Gala Dinner and Awards ceremony, are available from the AEGIC website.
