Two Canberra-based bakeries have thrown their support – and croissants and cookies – behind a fundraiser set to raise funds for melanoma.

Three Mills Bakery and Smart Cookie Canberra have joined forces with the community event, Canberra Melanoma March, which is encouraging people to take steps – quite literally – around Black Mountain Peninsula on March 3 to help raise funds for melanoma research.

The two businesses have donated pastries and cupcakes to the associated bake sale, with all proceeds going straight to the Melanoma Institute of Australia.

Three Mills Bakery Marketing and Brand Manager Belinda Armstrong told Her Canberra that this was an important cause on many levels.

“For the bigger picture with 1300 Australians dying each and every year, we need to work together to fund research. And on a personal level we have people within our business affected by the reach of the disease,” Belinda said.

“We have chosen to support the Melanoma March as melanoma so deeply affects the Australian community. The event is well organised and it’s such a great way to bring together the community for a cause and raise much-needed funds.”

However, beyond devouring delicious baked goods and vital fundraising, Canberra Melanoma March Committee Chair Margaret Leach said the day was also about gathering the community to reflect on those who have been, and continue to be, impacted by melanoma.

“It’s a time for reflection. It’s a time for a community to get together and walk to raise awareness and to raise funds for the Melanoma Institute,” she said.

“I really enjoy getting together and talking with other people about their journeys and their stories. It’s a really nice morning out, reflecting on people who have gone and the community atmosphere; a group of people marching for the same cause.”
