Iconic Sydney bakery chain Bourke Street Bakery has announced the location of its newest store in the Big Apple.
The store will be in the iconic Rockefeller Centre, right next door to Radio City, and will be the fifth Bourke Street Bakery in the city.
The doors to the first Bourke Street Bakery NYC on East 28th Street in Manhattan opened in 2019, and was met with enthusiasm.
Stocking Aussies classics like sausage rolls, alongside pastries, sourdough bread and quality coffee, the inaugural bakery also had a full menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as a liquor licence.
Bourke Street Bakery co-founder Paul Allam relocated to the US with his wife, Jessica, in 2017 to launch the venture, which opened to lines around the block.
According to Broadsheet, New York’s Bourke Street Bakery stuck closely to the proven formula that had garnered it success at the 11 Sydney stores. This included stocking Sydney’s star products, the ginger brulee tart, as well as the pork and fennel sausage rolls. A few popular American items have also made it onto the shelves, including a lime, meringue and coconut tart that was inspired by key lime pie.
Allam told Broadsheet a lot of consumers had been almost afraid of the bread at first, often wanting to buy a quarter or half of a loaf.
“So there’s an interesting conversation around getting them to try sourdough,” he said.
“At the same time, New Yorkers really enjoy the sweets and are open to trying new things, so that’s really fun.
“We didn’t know before we moved here that there are thousands of Australians living in NYC and many of them have lived in Surry Hills over the years.
“I suppose Bourke Street Bakery opening in NYC means there’s a little bit of homecoming to them here … I think they started telling their friends and word got out.”
The official opening date hasn’t been announced, but was touted to be soon.
