It’s only mid-January, but now is apparently the time people are most likely to break their New Year’s resolutions; they’re back at work, back to reality, and ready to ditch that resolve to have a salad for lunch and an apple for afternoon tea.
If this sounds like you and you’re near the Gold Coast, go ahead and cross that health kick off your list because the Custard Canteen has opened, and it is dishing up all manner of treats that definitely don’t feature on fitness blogs.
The team responsible for Bam Bam Bakehouse are behind the new waterside bakehouse and café at Tallebudgera Creek. Located in prime position at the front of the Tallebudgera Leisure Centre, the new 140-seat eatery is shaded by greenery and classic red-and-white striped umbrellas.
Owners Ursula and Ben Watts posted regular updates of work on the fit-out of the bakery and café on Facebook before the Custard Canteen officially opened shop on January 11.
Featuring antique workbenches (including one 6.5 metres long!) imported from France, plenty of plants to bring the outdoors into the small indoor eating room, and a state-of-the-art kitchen, everything was ready for the first eager customers to line up for the flaky, buttery morsels on offer.
The specialty product is of course the flaky, creamy, baked-to-perfection Portuguese Custard Tart, produced onsite in small batches.
The Watts’ actually travelled to Portugal towards the end of last year in order to learn how to make an authentic “Pastel de Nata” (Portuguese custard tart).
The bakery also makes a delicious hybrid of the almond croissant and the Portuguese custard tart with its almond croissant tarts, as well as an all-day breakfast and lunch menu featuring café favourites with a Custard twist.
Custard Canteen is open everyday from 6.30am for coffee, with food served from 7am.
