Australian bakers launch sweet appeal for bushfire relief

Australia has launched a global campaign, called Desserts 4 Difference, to raise money for the Australian Red Cross bushfire relief efforts.

An initiative of Australian pastry chefs, bakers, chocolatiers and dessert experts, they’re rallying their counterparts across the globe to get involved in this worldwide dessert sale on Saturday February 8.

Although the campaign is less than two weeks old, a growing list of participants from around the world in Australia, Thailand, Brazil, Russia, USA and Indonesia have already come on board to support the relief effort.

“Any business that sells desserts, sweets, or confections can get involved,” says pastry chef and campaign organiser Andre Sandison.

“Desserts sales become the driver for raising money and awareness for those affected by the worst bushfires Australia has ever seen.

“It is a simple initiative that encourages customer participation towards an important cause.”

Pastry chefs, dessert makers or businesses that would like to be a part of this global fundraising effort can get involved by creating a signature dessert or donating a portion of proceeds from existing dessert sales on Saturday, February 8 to the Desserts 4 Difference fundraising link.

Executive pastry chef Shlomi at Park Hyatt Sydney has created a dessert that is inspired by the trees and logs in the bushfires. The dessert will be available in their dining venues, The Dining Room and The Living Room and Bar on Saturday February 8, with a portion of proceeds going to the Desserts 4 Difference campaign.

 

Several businesses have also opted to collaborate on one-day pop up events. Businesses may also donate to support the campaign at any point.

All proceeds raised will go directly to the Australian Red Cross with the goal of reaching $50,000.
