Gold Coast Bakeries sold after 66 years in one family

After 66 years in the Marrable family, Gold Coast Bakeries has been sold to Toowoomba company Homestyle Bakeries.

Harvey and Dulcie Marrable opened the doors of their first bakery at Mermaid Beach in 1956, and Gold Coast Bakeries has—until now—remained an independent family-owned business, with their sons and grandsons working alongside Harvey.

From its premises in Molendinar on the Gold Coast, Gold Coast Bakeries produces and delivers more than 30,000 loaves of fresh bread daily to supermarkets and stores from Lismore, New South Wales, to Noosa, Queensland—a significant rise from the Marrables’ early days of 100 loaves per day.

Now 90, Harvey Marrable has decided it’s time to hang up the apron and retire, and told The Gold Coast Bulletin he was leaving the business in good hands.

“They’re nice people and they’re keeping on our staff and are going to introduce more business into the area,” he said.

Homestyle Bakeries provides bakery products across South East Queensland and beyond to schools, wholesale, fundraising and retail sectors and employs more than 200 people.
