French pastry chefs raise funds through chocolate sculptures

Pierre Herme helped to organise the charity fundraiser

Some of France’s most famous pastry chefs have sold chocolate artworks sold at auction, with the total reaching more than €100,000.

The event, which is touted as being the first of its kind, was in aid of charity, with funds going to help children hospitalised with leukaemia.

Auctioneer Arnaud Oliveaux told AFP it was truly a first.

The auction was organised by pastry chef Pierre Herme and featured 25 pastry chef including Patrick Roger, Cyril Lignac, and Nina Metayer. The eye-catching creations included a bouquet of white chocolate roses, a chocolate clock, and a huge piece that was made of 495 chocolate eggs and a Daum crystal.

According to news.com.au many of the chefs paired their creations with a one-of-a-kind experience. Pierre’s chocolate egg and crystal experience came with a private macaron lesson, while the 2m sculpture made by Patrick came with a tasting session.

Although the auction house did not release the selling price for the individual items, a total of €108,100 was raised.

Each of the sculptures was also edible, however Pierre added the chefs had created them to be displayed rather than eaten. Arnaud added that when you see them you don’t even feel like touching them.

“…because they’re so visually magnificent,” he said.
