The price of pistachios have risen dramatically in the wake of the global popularity of Dubai Chocolate.
Made famous on TikTok, Dubai Chocolate is the creation of Dubai local Sarah Hamouda, who initially set up her business, Fix Dessert Chocolatier, in 2021 as a side hustle while on maternity leave.
The chocolate bars are filled with a bright green filling made from pistachio creme, knafeh pastry, and tahini spread.
In Europe pistachio prices have moved upwards from €6.65 per pound in 2024 to €8.96 this year, with experts saying growers are “tapped out” according to Food Navigator Europe.
Iran is the second largest producer of pistachios, and exports to the UAE have risen by 40 per cent in the six months to March 2025, when compared to the total 2024 exports. In the US, which is the lead export country, pistachio supplies have fallen by 20 per cent in the 12 months to February 2025.
Giles Hacking from nut trader CG Hacking told the Financial Times there already wasn’t much in supply.
“… so when Dubai chocolate comes along, and chocolatiers are buying up all the kernels they can get their hands on, that leaves the rest of the world short,” he said.
