Muzza's Bakery releases pies for pups

Mount Albert-based pie institution Muzza’s Pies in New Zealand is turning heads—and wagging tails—with its latest venture: a specialty range of pies designed just for dogs.

The launch plays on the idea of a “cat-flavoured” dog pie, though the actual recipe is a carefully balanced mix of rabbit and fish, crafted to appeal to canine tastes.

Owner John Williams says the idea was sparked by regulars who couldn’t resist sharing bites of their own pies with their dogs.

“We’re all about bringing people together over great pies,” John said to The New Zealand Herald.

“And we saw an opportunity to extend that experience to their furry companions in a fun and slightly cheeky way.”

The pies are sold from a miniature dog-sized replica of the shop, stationed just outside the bakery. Williams notes that beyond the novelty, there’s a deeper purpose behind the project.

Ten per cent of every dog pie sale goes directly to Chained Dog Rehabilitation and Rehoming, a local organisation that supports the rehabilitation and rehoming of neglected dogs.

The playful concept has already drawn plenty of attention, both for its creativity and its cause.

“It started as a bit of a laugh—who wouldn’t be curious about what ‘cat-flavoured’ might mean to a dog?” John said.

“But it turned into something our customers genuinely love.”
