Cake maker sweetens deal for potential buyers of home

With their luxury Port Melbourne penthouse on the market, cake makers Nikos and Tass Poupouzas are making viewings extra appealing for prospective buyers by serving up sweets from their famous cafe, Nikos Cakes.

The three-bedroom apartment on Beach Street boasts incredible ocean view, with Nikos telling domain.com.au that the location also has special meaning to his family.

“When my family came to Australia in 1964, the ship landed right near here, and we came back … so it’s very, very sentimental to us,” he said.

The couple have spent the past eight years renovating the apartment, which takes up the top two floors of the Anchorage building, with Nikos saying, “It really takes the cake”.

Niko’s Cakes started in the 1980s, and now the Oakleigh business, which offers a mismatch of traditional Greek pastries, sweets, strong Greek coffee and cater for birthdays and weddings, including providing cakes for Nine reality TV show Married at First Sight nuptials.

The luxury apartment, which is directly across the road from Port Melbourne beach, has an asking price range of $3.3 million to $3.6 million. Records show the Poupouzases paid $2.1 million for the property in 2014.

Despite the wonderful location and their personal attachment, the couple are selling up to move closer to their children and grandchildren.
