Piemakers from all over Australian entered this year’s Official Great Aussie Pie Competition, making it our best nationally represented competition ever.

A whopping 1500 pies were entered to the comp that was judged over four days at Fine Food Australia.

Competition manager Danielle Lindsay said, “Normally our Sydney-based show receives less entrants, but we had the same numbers as Melbourne last year, and 38 per cent were new entrants to the comp.”

Head judge Mike French said the competition has become a truly national one, and that 2017 was the first year the whole country was represented, from the Northern Territory to Tasmania.

As for the pies themselves, Mike said there was a great variety of gourmet pies including Prawn Laksa, Confit Duck and Fijian Curry, Venison Chilli Chocolate, and of course, the wonderful range of the traditional Steak and Kidney, Lambs Fry and Bacon, and Drunken Lamb-style pies.”

He added that breakfast pies are on the rise, with a Porridge Pie with Berries and Yoghurt standing out for innovation. Also increasingly popular are gluten-free pies, which Mike says are proving a good alternative to a standard product.
