The Grumpy Baker, a Sydney culinary staple since 2002, is expanding its offerings with a new venue set to open soon.

The new location will not only include their signature bakery and café, but an additional vibrant space featuring a bar and dinner menu.

Located in the former site of a Potts Point Sydney bistro, the venue has undergone extensive renovations, with The Grumpy Baker co-founder Michael Cthurmer saying they were embracing a design full of curves, including an arched ceiling and a cave-like atmosphere.

“We knocked down a lot of walls—I prefer curves,” Michael told Broadsheet.

The new location will continue the bakery’s tradition of serving freshly baked bread, pastries, and pies during the daytime, while introducing a Middle Eastern-inspired dinner menu.

The menu features share plates such as roasted eggplant with tahini, spicy Moroccan fish hotpots, and steak skewers, alongside classic salads and dips.

“We’ll be serving all the rustic food I grew up on,” Michael said.

The Cthurmers are also introducing a café-style menu similar to their Vaucluse location, which includes shakshuka, breakfast rolls, and Turkish bourekas. One of their signature family dishes, a large plate featuring bacon, corn fritters, haloumi, and Israeli salad, will also be available.

“We start baking at six o’clock in the morning, rather than the night before, so everything is made fresh on the premises through the day,” Michael said.

The bakery’s expansion marks a new chapter for The Grumpy Baker, as the new venue has been under development for the last 18 months.

Over time, the bakery has evolved from a small operation in Darlinghurst into a well-known name with multiple locations proudly demonstrating the scale of growth any bakery with potential can achieve.
