The original is always the best, but these bakeries have mixed things up a bit this week with some fresh spins on traditional Anzac biscuits.
As a nation, we have a deep love for what is essentially an oat biscuit with a very long shelf life (the idea, after all, was that they could withstand long periods in transit to get to personnel stationed overseas during World War I). They are not only delicious, but their history makes them that little bit more special.
And as you’re about to see, they’re also super versatile! Here are just a few ways bakeries have taken this golden oldie and made it an epic treat.
1. Anzac Doughnuts
Doughnuts can on many delicious forms, and these special Anzac Day themed fried goodies are no exception! Donut Papi and Grumpy Donuts, both Sydney based, have these on offer.
2. Anzac-inspired Cheesecake
Why settle for just a biscuit when you could feed the whole family with a whole cheesecake from Bruns Bakery? The impressive-looking creation features a golden Anzac biscuit base with vanilla cheesecake filling, all topped with oozing butterscotch sauce.
3. Anzac Croissants
We can’t think of a more perfect combo than sweet, crunchy and golden Anzacs meeting a buttery, flaky croissant, and clearly neither could That Place Patisserie or Sonoma Bakery.
4. Anzac Kouign Amann
Leave it to the geniuses at Lune Croissanterie to come up with this next level pastry, which they modestly (and fairly) describe as “the best pastry in the world”.
5. Anzac Biscuit (but add ice cream)
There’s no dessert that can’t be improved upon by adding ice cream, and this is how Ox Rabbit in Perth recommend eating their traditional biscuits.
6. Anzac Brownie
Flour and Chocolate in Brisbane stepped up their usual brownie day by adding a sprinkle of Anzacs, creating a beautiful double choc Anzac crumble with caramel brownie. Yum!
7. Just Add Chocolate
As the Kingstons are the first to go in the Arnott’s Assorted packs, it only makes sense to add chocolate to our April 25 bikkies.
