Significant growth in bakery services across Victoria has been the catalyst for Kangan Institute’s new Broadmeadows campus.

With a focus on delivering retail bakery training to individuals and businesses, Kangan Institute has created a purpose-built facility where apprentices and students can hone their skills in real-world setups.

The Institute offers Certificate III in Retail Baking, and students can choose from one of three streams: bread, cake or pastry (or combined).

Kangan Institute lead trainer retail bakery Nagwa Mikhail said it’s important apprentices train and familiarise themselves with the same equipment they will go on to use in a commercial bakery environment.

“We have purchased and installed above industry standard commercial bakery equipment, which no other training providers currently have access to Melbourne Training Arena, to ensure we give our students and apprentices a competitive edge that will set them apart in the bakery industry,” Nagwa said

Education manager business and professional industries Shawn Vlaeminck added the retail bakery outlet would also assist students in gaining well-rounded business skills.

“It’s important for students to gain an understanding of the front of house process and what customers are looking for, as well as gaining an understanding into the financial aspects of the business,” he said.

“With this understanding, they will develop well-rounded skills, which will help them should they choose to start their own business, or should they wish to progress their career beyond being a baker.”
