Honey Thief Steals the Show

The Honey Thief Bakery cleaned out The Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria (RASV) Awards, stealing away with three awards.

The Honey Thief Bakery won gold medals for their Country Loaf (91/100) and Seeded Loaf (96/100) at the RASV Australian Food Awards. The Seeded Loaf then went on to win Best in Class.

The awards recognise the best Australian food producers across nine categories including dairy, frozen dessert, meat, value-add grain product, panty goods, preserves, seafood, convenience food, and produce. This year, the awards attracted 1,296 entries from more than 360 exhibitors, with entries coming from six states and one territory.

Around 300 guests attended the awards night at the Masterchef Pavillion in the Melbourne Showgrounds in September for the presentation dinner prepared by Nick Malook of Atlantic Group.

Honey Thief Bakery, located in Blackburn South, has been open since December 2014. They have entered the RASV Australian Food Awards for the last four years, having taken home gold, silver and bronze awards as well as Best in Class and Champion Trophy for Best Grains/Pulses among others.

Head Baker at the Honey Thief, Christian Blackman, says, “It’s just amazing to achieve this recognition again.”

He says there were fantastic producers at the awards who are all working towards a common goal:

“Good, clean, wholesome food. It’s great to be a part of that, and well done to the RASV for their support in administering these awards.

“We use the best quality organic, stoneground flour, filtered water and salt—that’s it. The bread is naturally leavened using traditional methods resulting in a bread with a glassy crust, which shatters easily under your teeth to reveal a moist crumb underneath.”

Christian says The Honey Thief Bakery is becoming a destination.

“Not only have the locals embraced us as their own, we are now getting customers travelling from some distance away—usually because a friend or relative has told them, ‘You’ve just got to try this bread!’

“That is very satisfying to hear, and makes all the early starts and hard work worthwhile. I’ve got a great team, which definitely helps.”
